Mobility as a Service: A New Wave of Transportation

With emerging technology comes new methods for mobility. This future journey to modernize and streamline movement – on the ground or in the skies – is a challenge many key players in the tech and aerospace world have taken on. One start to tackling this new project is by designing a one stop shop for mobility service payment. According to The Conversation, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is “basically a platform designed to make better use of existing infrastructure and transport modes. MaaS begins with a journey planner that is linked to one-stop payment for a range of mobility services – ride-hailing, e-scooters, e-bikes, taxis, public transport, and so on.”

So what is drawing these organizations and innovative individuals to set their sights on MaaS? Perhaps it’s the monetary value these new opportunities are projected to earn. Maybe it’s the commitment to resolving our global traffic congestion and growing population issues. Or it might just be that people are starting to feel the burgeoning excitement about pioneering a new ecosystem that impacts future generations. Either way, people are starting to get interested.

“MaaS is the newest entrant in the mobility tech field. It has attracted US$6.8 billion to date, but is expected to grow to over US$100 billion by 2030. This idea is creating great enthusiasm, not only among private entrepreneurs, but also in the public sector.”

How will these resources be allocated to enhance our commutes and improve our lives? We’ll just have to wait and see.
