Jenn Mulkern, JBI Helicopters, uses Instagram to connect with, educate, and inspire future aviators in a growing aviation community.
My name is Jenn Mulkern, and I'm currently a helicopter pilot at JBI Helicopters. I was fortunate enough to have aviation in my family. My father is a helicopter pilot and, guess what, I had my first helicopter flight when I was six-weeks old! I grew up flying with my Dad and took the controls as soon as I could reach them. Fun Fact: I was able to hover before I could drive a car. It seemed only natural to turn flying into a career.
The first aircraft I ever took the controls of was a Bell 206BIII. I was twelve. My father flew for a corporate client and when time and space allowed, I would go along for the flights. I will always have a soft spot for the Jet Ranger. It feels like home. From there I went to flight school and soon started instructing in the S300CBI. After about a year, I was offered a position flying a Bell 407 for a private family, splitting my time between south Florida and Maine.
I did that for about six years before accepting a job in Boston, MA flying ENG in a Bell 206L4. I just started working for JBI Helicopters out of Pembroke, NH about two months ago. JBI is a Bell service center and we fly 206B’s, 206L’s, 407s, and 429s doing everything from utility work to external load to corporate charter. Bell aircraft provide exactly what we need for such a diversified operation.
Q: What are your favorite aspects of using Instagram? Why did you start documenting your aviation career here?
Instagram has proven to be a great way to reach out to fellow and future aviators. Our community is very small and I’m honored to be a part of the inspiration to get people interested in aviation. Initially, my Instagram was similar to everyone else. Pictures of family, pets, beautiful places, and occasionally helicopter related posts. I soon realized that my social media could have an actual impact on people looking to get into aviation. I try to respond to every message asking about the process and will continue to do so.
Q: At Bell, one of our main objectives is to thrill our customers, both pilots and passengers. What is one thrilling aspect of flying Bells that people might not know?
In my operation, we do so many different, unique jobs that Bell certainly provides the best aircraft for each and every mission. Whether it be restocking a remote fishing pond, emergency powerline patrol, or picking up corporate clients for a meeting in Manhattan, our Bell aircraft fit the bill and always deliver.
The things that I love the most about Bell helicopters are their versatility, reliability, and aesthetics.
Reliability is incredibly important in all faculties of the business. Having reliable equipment that continue to perform day in and day out is crucial for any aviation operation. Lastly, aesthetics… The quintessential Bell look is iconic and just plain good looking.
Q: What is something you would tell a helicopter pilot in training about jumping in their first Bell aircraft?
I try to encourage anyone even thinking about getting into aviation, especially helicopter aviation, to go for an introductory flight... ideally in a Bell aircraft! I have no doubt that they will fall in love and pursue a career in aviation. Like I did!
Yes, I do love horses! When I was living in Florida I volunteered at an ex-racehorse rescue, where racehorses that don’t make it at the track can be retrained and adopted out as riding horses. During my time there I was able to adopt out over 40 horses, including one to myself who I work with and train when I’m not flying. I also enjoy hiking, exercising, and boating. Anything outdoors!
